Nearly finished kitchen

Here's the finished kitchen - or near as dammit. We still have to decide on a splashback which is a tough call because we don't want it to look too kitchen-ish given that this is a living room as well.

Internal glazing is now fully in

So very nearly done now. Just a few bits of electrics and decoration, and some other minor niggles - oh and there's the bill to pay...
The internal glazing went in yesterday. We were mystified last night because the living area (shown here) was really warm into the evening even though the heating wasn't on (thermostat is set to 18 degrees). I mean it was REALLY warm - 25 degrees at the end of november (12 degrees outside). I cannot find any explanation for this. Surely the heat sink mechanism from the slate in the buffer space can't do that much! Please send ideas!

Inner skin - finally!

Inner skin - finally!
Originally uploaded by Lenny & Meriel.
After roughly 20 weeks of waiting we have finally got the upper part of the inner skin of glazing - despite the gale force 8 winds last night. It went in very smoothly thanks to Tim Abbott and a team of helpers.
Brian (our foreman) is in the photo despite the fact that he retired last friday - Thanks Brian!
The lower parts will go in on wednesday.

Rain water grill

The solution for the rainwater drain outside the sliding doors turned out to be a swimming pool grill - it's plastic which we're not big fans of - but we think it works here. Well done Rihoys for finding it.

Oil tank screening

Meriel's mum and dad kindly bought a large bamboo plant as a housewarming present when they visited (no they didn't carry it on the plane). It was big enough to split into 3 pieces and plant out to screen our oil tank. This photo shows 2 of the 3 pieces - the 3rd is to the left to provide some continuity in the flowerbed. Let's hope the wind doesn't kill it off - I feel optimistic.

Our mud pit makeover

The builders used an area of lawn to park on for the whole of last winter. For most of that tthey used sheets of ply to pretect the soil somewhat. Then at the end they packed up and took the ply away but people kept parking there and it rained - a lot. Needless to say it turned into a mudpit. Rihoys agreed to sort it out for us and get a man with a rotivator in to decompact the soil. So he came and went and we're finally able to reclaim the space and start doing stuff to it.

It will be home to more edible stuff. On plan so far are a small sweet cherry tree, rhubarb, sea kale, artichokes, raspberries and gooseberries. The path is all the left over patio stone which Meriel has managed to tesselate.

One HEAVY piece of granite

Our kitchen worktops arrived and were put into place a couple of weeks ago. The island top took 8 men to get it into place and a couple of blobs of silicon to keep it there! One (smaller) piece of granite needs recutting and will be with us mid november.
We love the worktop:-)
